What is VMS?

by admin

VMS is the abbreviation of Virtual Memory System which is a multitasking, multi-user, virtual memory operating system from a company called DEC (Digital Equipment Corporation) and runs on their VAX and Alpha range of minicomputers and workstations.

VMS was first introduced in 1979 along with the first VAX minicomputer and is similar to VAX itself in the fact that it has undergone many changes over the year. It is a 32-bit system that exploits the virtual memory concept.

VMS is now referred to by those in the industry as OpenVMS.
